It's all about cash
Money making for the Noobs
Yes, it's not easy being a newbie, and one big problem is actually getting the money to advance your skills. However, even if you've no fighting skills worth mentioning, there are still ways of acquiring some cash. Searching for stuff on the streets and selling them will give you a few pence, but clothes in poor condition do not sell well. They can be mended at Gapp's low altar (1 north, 1 east, 1 south from the entrance of Gapp's temple in Ankh-Morpork - check Kefka's Maps if you don't know where that is). Just put the damaged item of clothing on the low altar and pick it up when it floats down. Rest and repeat, it should also give you a couple of faith.points TM's. Make sure you don't take someone else's clothing from the altar, it's illegal. Recovering corpses buried by other players and taking the remaining equipment from their corpses can also make you money fast. Finally, some of the quests also offer monetary rewards, some as high as 100 dollars. Game rules prohibit us from telling you more about them, but keep your eyes peeled and the rewards may be wonderful.
In Ankh-Morpork, the butcher on Isle of Gods, southwest of Brass Bridge will pay for cat, chicken, cow, dog, duck, goat, horse, sheep and pig corpses. You can also apply for a job at Tarnach's Quality Consumables, in the Magical Supplies Emporium (Go east, up, northeast from the entrance to get to it.), in Sator Square. The tannery on Phedre road buys animal skins (rat, dog etc) for prices depending on the size of the animal; and in the Ramtops, in the fur shop in Mad Wolf, you can sell the skins and furs of all those animals mentioned on the list (fox, vermine, wolf, yeti etc).
Even if your guild does not have a fighting primary, there are ways to
make money using the abilities it offers.
Priests can cast various useful rituals, restore, shield,
healing, raise dead pet, raise and resurrect being only a few of them.
Praying while holding a set of prayer beads will also charge them up; a
fully-charged set of prayer beads adds 2 wisdom points and sells for a
good price in a player shop.
Wizards have the ability to scribe scrolls and sell them to
playershops or directly to players. Transcendent Pneumatic Alleviator,
Floron's Fabulous Mirror, Endorphin's Floating Friend and Jogloran's
Portal of Cheaper Travelling are relatively easy and highly-in demand
spells. After you manage to get the skills to portal, you can easily
make money by transporting people across the Disc.
Witches can make a variety of teas
(The Disc's Witches Guild (DWG) has a list).
For a newbie, selling them directly to other players is often the best approach; one of our members would brew a few bottles, wander the streets until she
found another player, ask them if they wanted to buy a bottle for 5
dollars and ofter go away with 30 dollars and a "Keep the change".
Another good, though time-consuming money source is selling smelly
seeds (DWG has instructions on how to make them). Also, they can do
delivery service, since their brooms allow them to easily reach any
player in a matter of minutes; nothing loosens up one's purse strings
like running out of antidote in Gloomy Forest or swag bags in the middle of a stealing spree.
Other than that, there are always various little services you can
perform for players. Helping people move furniture or delude their
items, buying items for them from your guild's shops (make sure you're
allowed to before you do so, though) or scouring the hills with them in
search of the perfect moon dragon can net you a nice buck. If, after
all this advice, you still have trouble getting the money to advance
your skills, get more fighting skills by learning from other players;
not only is it free, but, if you're a wizard, witch or priest, a good
teacher will actually cost you less xp per level than it would have
costed to advance at your guild (To find teachers, use Flatline's Skill Site).
In Bes Pelargic, there are a few take-aways that are often in need of people to deliver the food. The Green Tea Takeaway Restaurant, on Two For Tea Lane near The Serpent, in south BP, is probably the easiest to work for.
In Djelibeybi, wander along the city walls, as soldier corpses are often pushed off the walls by high-level players and their equipment is worth a pretty penny.
And in Genua, try the job office on Sapphire Street. You'll probably be needing tools such as claw hammers and such which are available at the tool shop along Carrefour Cresent.
