Focus tea is a potion which provides a witch with information about one of her memorized spells. It serves a similar purpose to the wizards' spellcheck command.

[edit] Making focus tea

Focus tea is made from Floppy Madmen mushrooms, as found in the vicinity of Granny Weatherwax's cottage.

Focus tea does not need to be brewed.

[edit] Effects

Upon drinking focus tea, the drinker will start feeling woozy, and then be encouraged to 'focus' on a spell that they have memorized.

They will then enter a trance-like state (or, from the point of view of an observer, fall asleep), in which they will be visited by the spell they have memorized.

The spell will then tell the witch various information about itself - namely:

  • What sort of spell it is (offensive/defensive/miscellaneous)
  • The stages involved in the spell, and the skill used for each stage.
  • How likely the witch is to succeed or fail at each stage.

The assessment of success or failure at each stage is an estimate, which is more accurate with a higher magic.spells.special bonus.

Whilst in the trance, the witch cannot take enter any commands at all.

For every stage checking the success uses some GP. If the witch runs out of GP while focussing on a spell the results might not be complete.

Complete focus tea result:

Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: Wotcher! My name is Banishing of Unnatural Urges.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: I'm a defensive spell.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges makes calm, soothing noises.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: To cast me, you need no components! Hooray.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges bings happily.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: For stage one of me, using the conjuring skill, I guess you would definitely fail. I'm that tough, see.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: For stage two of me, using the fire skill, I guess you would definitely fail. I'm that tough, see.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: For stage three of me, using the banishing skill, I guess you would definitely fail. I'm that tough, see.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: I wish someone would clean up around here. It's a bit messy.
The image of Banishing of Unnatural Urges blurs and is replaced with the real world.

Incomplete focus tea result (reduced to the relevant bits):

Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: For stage one of me, using the conjuring skill, I guess you would definitely fail. I'm that tough, see.
The image of Banishing of Unnatural Urges wavers slightly.
Banishing of Unnatural Urges asks: Er, are you all right? Hello?
Banishing of Unnatural Urges says: For stage two of me, using the fire skill, I guess you would definitely fail. I'm that tough, see.
The image of Banishing of Unnatural Urges blurs and is replaced with the real world.

[edit] Messages

You receive many messages which indicate a range of the likelihood of success for each skill:

Success
chance
(%)
Message
0 - 9 you would definitely fail
10 - 19 you would almost certainly fail
20 - 29 you would very probably fail
30 - 39 you would likely fail
40 - 49 you are a little more likely to fail than to succeed
50 - 59 you might as well toss a coin
60 - 69 you are a little more likely to succeed than to fail
70 - 79 you might succeed if you put some effort into it
80 - 89 you have a good chance of succeeding
90 - 99 you would almost certainly succeed
100+ you would definitely succeed

This is probably a "base" chance with many modifiers after it.

[edit] Trivia

  • Whilst the witch is in her trance, she cannot be attacked.
  • The drinker only enters a trance if they 'focus' on a spell - failing to do so in a reasonable time just results in the potion wearing off and nothing happening. Thus, inventive players will be disappointed to learn that they cannot knock NPCs out by throwing focus tea coated darts at them.
