[edit] Shaving and sanding
Regarding the columns for shaving and sanding attempts: First number to register the failed attempts (resulting in injuring your thumb and losing HP), second number to register partial success ("your fingers cramp...") until the work is finished. (Should both be considered failures, just one more painful than the other?)
| item | wood type | design bonus | turning bonus | whittling bonus | shaving attempts | sanding attempts | finished result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wand | olive wood | 241 | 198 | 219 | 7/6 | 2/8 | This is a foot-long length of olive wood, of uneven width. It's apparently a staff. |
| wand | rowan | 241 | 198 | 225 | 1/3 | 0/3 | This is a foot-long length of rowan, of uneven width. It's apparently a staff. |
| wand | oak | 244 | 201 | 225 | 0/3 | 2/8 | This is obviously a wand, and it would probably do well for any normal purpose, but it's not entirely straight. |
| pen | holly | 244 | 201 | 225 | 0/4 | 0/6 | This pretty, slender holly pen sits lightly in the hand, the delicate shaft and responsive balance leaving no doubt that it will write beautifully for a skilled writer. |
| wand | cherry wood | 244 | 201 | 226 | 2/2 | 1/2 | This is a slim cherry wood wand, smooth and unadorned. |
| pen | elm | 244 | 201 | 226 | 0/3 | 0/3 | This is a sturdy elm fountain pen, smooth and unadorned. It sits neatly and comfortably in the hand. |
| staff | cedar | 253 | 202 | 227 | 0/4 | 0/2 | This is obviously a staff, and it would probably do well for any normal purpose, but it's not entirely straight. |
| wand | ebony | 253 | 202 | 227 | 0/4 | 0/3 | Referring to this length of rough, splintery ebony as a wand is a courtesy at best. It looks as though the wood-turner chewed it to shape with his teeth, and then smeared it with an uneven coating of grime from the forge. |
| flute | ebony | 253 | 202 | 227 | 6/0 | n/a | Did not even get as far as giving it a proper shape. |
After the turning process all items seem to be ordinary-looking, and they gain their final shape when you finish with the drawknife.
[edit] Staining and polishing
You cannot hurt yourself by failing. Sponge and wax will only be used up and disappear from your inventory once you finish the job.
