Steal is a covert command used to steal carried items and coins from a purse.

Steal can be learned at 20 levels of covert.manipulation.stealing from the leader of any thief guild.

There are various messages you can see when you successfully steal from someone:
With expert skill, you steal <item> from <target>. You deftly relieve <target> of the burden of owning <item>. With deft fingers, you steal <item> from <target>. You steal <item> from <target>. You reach towards your goal but pause suddenly as <target> seems to sense something. He/she/it doesn't spot you and you manage to steal <item> from him/her/it.
Failure (were spotted):
You try to steal <item> from <target> but he/she/it notices you and manages to protect his/her/its possessions. <target> moves aggressively towards you!
Failure (target doesn't have what you're trying to steal):
You silently search through <target>'s belongings for some <item> but are unable to locate any.
Failure (target doesn't have what you're trying to steal, and you possibly failed a stealth check):
You silently search through <target>'s belongings for some <item> but are unable to locate any. <target> seems to notice something.
