An observation: when I was messing around with burying and recovering things, it seemed that they disappeared at regular intervals, regardless of how long they'd been buried. I think that items don't disappear after a certain amount of time being buried, but rather that the "underground" space or whatever you'd call it empties itself every x amount of time. (You can see this if you bury something, recover it ten seconds or so later, then bury it again immediately and keep doing that.)

When I did it in my passage room, stuff disappeared every... I think it was every minute or two. A short amount of time, anyway. Then when I tried it out in the terrains around Lancre and things lasted much longer... I don't remember if I checked to see whether they also disappeared at intervals. I'd assume burial basically works the same most places, but I also would have assumed that buried things would last the same amount of time, so.

(At this point I didn't really feel like going around to different places burying and recovering pennies at intervals trying to figure out which places had which amounts of time, or which places were "exceptions" if there's a "standard" amount of time, or whether other things affected it, etc.)

Hmm, in the main hall of the Thieves' Guild, I buried a penny, then buried a burnt torch a few minutes later. After a while, I was unable to recover the penny, but I got the torch back. So don't think the underground resets itself every so-and-so minutes, unless it's an indoors thing. --Tabs 18:07, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

I went to the same place (well, one west of the main hall since it's less busy) and did this:

43:14 - buried derechmus

43:28 - buried empty spool

48:04 - buried penny

48:15 - recovered derechmus

52:53 - recovered spool and penny

53:09 - buried spool and penny

01:13 - tried to recover, "There is nothing buried here."

So... the first time I buried the spool, I was able to recover it after nine minutes and 25 seconds. But the second time I buried it, it was gone after only eight minutes and four seconds. Your experience is explicable if the penny was already gone when you buried the torch. (I was trying to duplicate yours, more or less--by burying two things at around the same time, I could recover one to confirm that the other was still there when I buried something else.)
